The Hickey-Shanafelt 9ollective is a modern jazz nonet led by long-time friends Kent Hickey and Alex Shanafelt. Founded in 2019, the group is dedicated to writing, commissioning, and performing original music written by band members, local artists, and up-and-coming musicians around the country. The band features an eclectic book that takes advantage of the mixed small ensemble and the breadth of jazz, with charts spanning from traditional swing to aleatoric and free improvisation.

The group returns to Chicago as part of a regional tour of The Region, fresh off the release of two albums in 2025. "The Kaleidoscope Suite," released in May 2025, documents the extended work of the same name co-written by Alex and Kent. The Suite is a cross-disciplinary collaboration with Indianapolis artist Kelsey Behl, where Behl paints a new work live alongside the band as they perform four thematically-driven movements. "A 9ollective Christmas," released in November 2025, is the nonet's take on familiar Christmas classics, featuring nine original arrangements that reimagine seasonal songs.

The group went into the studio earlier this year to record 9 brand new original arrangements of some of your favorite holiday tunes. This performance will feature vocalist Emma Hedrick on select songs as well as mystery gifts and maybe even a surprise visit from Santa. You won't want to miss it!

Founded in 2019, the Hickey-Shanafelt 9ollective is a contemporary jazz nonet dedicated to the performance and development of the modern jazz repertoire. Based in Indianapolis, the group is composed of established, local professionals and young, up-and-coming musicians who share a passion for connecting with our community through music. The band is primarily an outlet for emerging and professional composers, arrangers, and performers, and is dedicated to programming both original music and fresh arrangements of familiar standards. The Kaleidoscope Suite is a collaboration with visual artist Kelsey Behl. She will be actively painting throughout the work with each movement corresponding to different palettes. The program will also feature a few of the group’s original tunes and arrangements.

Join Indy’s premier jazz nonet for the release show of their new studio album, “The Kaleidoscope Suite.” Since 2023, the 9ollective has collaborated with local painter Kelsey Behl to produce this innovative work of multi-disciplinary interaction and creation. Experience “The Kaleidoscope Suite” live alongside other originals written by the band to celebrate the album’s release! Plan to come early to take advantage of The Prewitt’s premium food and drink offerings. Doors open to ticket holders at 6:00PM for dinner, show to follow at 7:00PM. Tickets are $20 & will be available at the door pending availability, but it is strongly encouraged to get your tickets ahead of time to secure your spot. We hope to see you there!
